Christian Science is based on the Bible. It was discovered and founded by Mary Baker Eddy, to reinstate Christian healing as practised by Jesus Christ.
Come and find out for yourselves – all are welcome at one of our services in person or online.
First Church of Christ, Scientist, Bedford holds services every Sunday at 11:00am which are open to everyone. Our services are very simple and are led by two elected readers. We sing hymns and pray. We also listen to readings from the Bible and our textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy.
These two books are our Pastor, available every day of the year.
Click here for the Bible and here for Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. You can read some of the linked Bible and Science and Health passages that all Christian Scientists are studying this week.
Here in Bedford we have a Sunday School which starts at 11.00am and is open to young people up to the age of 20. This is an opportunity for children and students of all ages to find out more about their relationship to God.
The Bible and the Christian Science textbook Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures form the basis for each lesson, using the spiritual interpretation to understand more deeply Jesus’ healings and how they came about.
Young people realise the relevance spiritual healing has to all types of problems in today’s world and each child, from the youngest to the oldest, is able to prove for themselves the teachings of Christian Science.
We also have Testimony Meetings every Wednesday at 8:00pm, everyone is welcome. The most important aspect of these meetings is the time set aside for those present to share accounts of healing that they’ve experienced through their understanding of how much God loves each one of us.
The readings from our Pastor are chosen by the reader to meet a current local, national or international need.
Our church was founded on Christian healing, so these Testimony Meetings are a vital part of our activity here in Bedford. They’re open to everyone, so do come and find out more!
Our Reading Room is open to everyone. It’s a quiet place to read and pray. There is always someone at hand to help you find what you need.
We have a varied selection of study materials including Bibles; the textbook on Christian Science healing, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy; and all Mary Baker Eddy’s other books.
Other resources available are Christian Science magazines, The Christian Science Monitor Weekly, books on the history of Christian Science, children’s books, music CDs and online tools. All of these can be used, borrowed or bought here.
Members, friends and anyone interested meet together once a month in the Sunday School room to read through and discuss the books on which Christian Science is based. The SMRG usually meets on the third Saturday of the month, starting around 10.30am and lasting for a couple of hours.
There’s plenty of time for questions, sharing healing insights and digging deep! Why not come and get to know these books better and discover their message of healing for everyone!
In addition to its churches and reading rooms, the Christian Science movement has many provisions and activities which support both its members and the general public. Explore the links below to learn more.
Many Christian Scientists have chosen to rely on Christian Science for healing. Such healing can be of physical/medical problems or of relationships, money, work, and so on. Sometimes the healing is through their own prayer, sometimes with help from one of many Christian Science Practitioners around the world. Thousands of articles have been written and testimonies of healing published.

Christian Science nursing is a religious vocation that is distinct from registered or licensed nursing. It provides spiritual reassurance and skilled, practical, physical care to those who are relying on Christian Science prayer for healing, also known as Christian Science treatment. This prayer-based treatment specifically applies the laws of God that were evident in Christ Jesus’ ministry to address all kinds of challenges, including those involving health.
Christian Science prison chaplains offer support for those in need in prisons. It is a legal right for all prisoners to have access to a chaplain of their own denomination or faith. In addition, Christian Science prison chaplains work in chaplaincy teams providing pastoral support.
There are Christian Science Committees on Publication throughout the world. Their position and work is to correct any mistaken perceptions about the church, its members or its Founder, Mary Baker Eddy, that come into the public domain, in a spirit of love and healing. The local representative for the East of England can be contacted at eastofengland@compub.org and will be happy to provide information and talk with anyone.
Many people today have questions about whether prayer can make a difference. Christian Science practitioners are convinced it can. They’ve seen evidence of it. They’ve experienced real healing proof of God’s care. And they are available to help others find how prayer can bring healing to their lives also.
